PARENTS: What's your role, and how can you support?

Parents’/Guardians’ Responsibilities:

Familiarize yourself with the curriculum, the teacher, and the course’s expectations

Knowing a little about what your student is doing in French class will give you the opportunity to ask questions and even learn a little something from them.

Emphasize the importance of learning French, both at school and at home

The attitude you display towards learning French will often be mimicked by your child, so being positive about learning a second language will show them it’s important to you, and therefor important to them.

Support the learning of the language by incorporating it into daily life

Find fun ways to incorporate the French language at home to increase your child’s exposure to the language.

Model appropriate school behaviour

All classes are crated equal and French homework needs to be completed too! Be sure to model appropriate behaviour towards all subjects

By supporting your child by expanding their vocabulary in the language spoken at home, as well as encouraging them to make connections in French, you'll provide them with the structure to become a lifelong language learner.
Encourage play through Gamefication - Quizlet, Gimkit, Blooket, Conjuguemos, Duolingo	These games can be used for many reasons! Teacher-created games can be perfect for reviewing key terms and concepts before evaluations Student-created games can be a way for the student to create study notes and personalize their games	Repetition and immersion are key for students to become more confident in the language, so by encouraging your child to play with vocab, grammar, and themes in French they’ll be retaining while having fun
Encourage interaction with Extra Resources from the teacher, like this page!	As your child to complete one activity off the list per evening on top of their homework. Giving them choice will provide more of a buy-in as well!	Additional resources are a great way to encourage student-led learning and reflection, as well as have your child interact with the language on a daily basis if on rotary.
Be curious and have fun! Incorporate French into every day activities	Add French subtitles to the Netflix shows you're already watching Listen to a weekly podcast like French Made Easy to learn something together each week Follow French athletes on social media	By integrating French throughout your “regular life”, French will seem more accessible!
